A Conversation about Freud's Most Influential Paper: Mourning and Melancholia

with Colleen Sandor, PhD and James Poulton, PhD

NOTE: THE SEMINAR ON MOURNING AND MELANCHOLIA HAS BEEN CANCELED DUE TO SCHEDULIONG DIFFICULTIES - please check back similar seminars in the 2018-2019 Academic year.

DESCRIPTION: Freud's paper, Mourning and Melancholia, is regarded not only as a foundational contribution to the development of psychoanalytic theory (and, in particular, of the object relations perspective in psychoanalysis), but also as one of the most insightful papers ever written into the hidden workings of the mind. In this seminar, Drs. Sandor and Poulton will lead participants in a discussion of Mourning and Melancholia - its origins, meaning and impact on the entire history of psychoanalysis.

OBJECTIVES:
1.     Participants will analyze the deeper meanings implicit in Mourning and Melancholia and link them to subsequent developments in psychoanalysis.
2.     Participants will critically discuss the theories of depression and identification that Freud advances in Mourning and Melancholia.
