A Midwinter's Night of Psychoanalysis and Music: Laurie Anderson, Leonard Cohen, and Ferron

with Annette Ephroni, APRN and James Poulton, PhD

Thursday, January 24, 2019

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Join us for a winter's evening of conversation about selected songs from Laurie Anderson, Leonard Cohen, and Ferron. We'll consider the social and historical context in which the songs were written, the personalities of the songwriters, and the various meanings - psychoanalytic and otherwise - that can and have been ascribed to the songs. We want to encourage this evening to be more discussion than presentation, so participants will be asked to listen to the songs in advance and to come prepared with their own thoughts and perspectives.

OBJECTIVES:
1.     Participants will utilize multiple psychoanalytic concepts in the interpretation of songwriting from three diverse musical traditions.
2.     Participants will compare, from a psychoanalytic perspective, Anderson, Cohen, and Ferron's views of the nature of emotion, human experience, and the unconscious.
