A Midwinter's Night of Psychoanalysis and Poetry: From Walt Whitman to T. S. Eliott

with Annette Ephroni, APRN and James Poulton, PhD

Friday, January 19, 2018

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Join us for a winter's evening of conversation about selected poems from Walt Whitman, T. S. Eliott and Bell Hooks. We'll consider the social and historical context in which the poems were written, the personalities of the authors, and the various meanings - psychoanalytic and otherwise - that can and have been ascribed to the poems. We want to encourage this evening to be more discussion than presentation, so participants will be asked to read the poems in advance and to come prepared with their own thoughts and perspectives.

1.     Participants will utilize multiple psychoanalytic concepts in the interpretation of poetry from three diverse poetic traditions.
2.     Participants will compare, from a psychoanalytic perspective, Whitman, Eliott and Hook's views of the nature of emotion, human experience, and the unconscious.
